Need my printer set up to work with my new laptop

I just got a new laptop and I need my printer set up to work with it. The printer is a Canon one I bought about 18 months ago and still works fine with our old laptop which has now died. I have the new laptop here, the printer is on a shelf in the spare room, and I have tried twice to set it up myself and failed. I think it needs a driver or something. Looking for someone in Bristol who can come round and do it for me, and ideally show me how to scan a document to email because I can never remember how.
